Dave Cooper, MD, is passionate about encouraging and developing the next generation of engineers so as Chair of Eastbourne Engineering Club he was delighted to help judge the 26th annual Young Engineers Challenge again this year.
The team from Willingdon Community School won the Challenge organised by Eastbourne Education Business Partnership on behalf of the Eastbourne Engineering Club.
Nine teams of Year 6 and 7 pupils embarked on the construction of two towers and their transporter bridge assembly to transfer pump components from one tower to the other.
Working to engineering drawings and using a variety of materials, the teams had to work accurately and consistently. Everyone experienced a range of important engineering, problem solving and team working skills. All the teams completed their transporter bridge assembly that was then load tested. All survived basic testing of around 1kg with varying degrees of collapse thereafter. The teams were judged on their build quality against the challenge specification, innovation, teamwork and final testing.
