The Royal College of Nursing, London, undertook an extensive lift modernisation programme that was entirely project managed by leading specialist engineer consulting company, LECS UK.

Lift modernisation of firefighting lift and scenic lift

This was a modernisation project of an existing firefighting lift and a scenic lift at the prestigious Cavendish Square building in London. The restored Grade II listed building built in 1729 has seven storeys blending Georgian features and contemporary architecture.

LECS UK’s Lee Dean was lead consulting engineer at the helm of this project that started in May 2024 with detailed specifications being drawn up, tender documentation developed and complete management of the procurement process, to include reviewing all tenders and advising the client on all areas of this building infrastructure spend.

LECS UK also oversaw the construction phase, from design and development through to installation and commissioning, and liasing with the principal contractor, Elan Lifts, to include monitoring site health and safety matters over the construction phase.

Appointed consulting lift engineers for next project – hydraulic passenger lift and a ‘goods only’ lift

Lee Dean, LECS UK said: “This project achieved exactly what the client wanted. With two great lifts fit for purpose for the future. Thanks go to the entire team that worked on this to include Elan Lifts; Meiller; Dewhurst; Wittur and SASS.

“We’re also delighted that LECS UK has now also been appointed as consulting engineers on another project in the same building. This will focus on the modernisation/replacement of a hydraulic passenger lift as well as a ‘goods only’ lift.”

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has invested in a building fund, including the lift replacements at 20 Cavendish Square, as part of a multi-year program to ensure its estate is fit for purpose and reduce environmental impact. This work is part of a broader effort to modernise the RCN’s facilities, with further work planned across its UK estate in 2025 and beyond.
